About Me

I’m a freelance writer (mostly as Gaeilge – see my published work page, if you’re in to that sort of thing) and occasional blogger (a blog which you’re on right now, as it happens). I’ve been known to make the occasional appearance on the radio waves (mostly as Gaeilge). In 2009 I was nominated as journalist of the year (I’m mentioned somewhere in that link, I believe) by Oireachtas na Meáin Cumarsáide.

I’m a gnat’s hair away from graduating Trinity College, Dublin with a degree in Computer and Electronic Engineering – which would make me, above all other things I’ve trained for, a programmer.

Aside from all the above (“stuff I’m notionally good at”), there are also a large number of things which collectively fall under the heading “stuff I’m, euphemistically speaking, not quite as good at”. This list includes brewing beer, pontificating about lazy economists, pontificating about lazy journalists, playing the guitar and, when I’m really not thinking through the consequences of my actions, making bets and posting the results on YouTube. Thankfully that last one has only happened once. So far. (Although the banner at the top of the site was also the result of a bet about bring my laptop up a really tall mountain. I don’t even think I won anything for that one…).

In 2009 I took part in an attempt to break the world record for longest 5-a-side soccer match ever. We broke the previous record of 25 hours(ish) (held by an English under-13 girls soccer team, I believe) but our witness fell asleep. So no place in the record books for me, then.

Pre-2009… Well, loads of stuff happened. Way too much for one page. Or too much to write just now, anyway.

I also play hurling for Ballinteer St. Johns, and can very, very occasionally be spotted playing poker.

Broadly speaking, this site exists as an extension of all of the above into “the inter-tubes”.

It really, really should go without saying, but all opinions expressed here are my own, and most certainly have not been approved by any employer past, present or future.
